Procedure
- Stallion Test - History
The Stallion Performance Test has always been an essential step
in the approval process of a stallion. Developed more than half
a century ago, this standard test had not only significant influence
on the improvement of the quality of stallions in Europe, especially
in Germany but also in the US where ISR-Oldenburg N.A. conducted
the first stallion test in 1986. At this time - and for many years
the 100-Day Test was the common format which we adopted
from Germany. The stallion tests have helped to select the best
stallions for our breeding program and gave breeders a lot of
information about the stallions.
Ten years later, in 1996, the ISR-Oldenburg Registry started
to offer the Short Test (30 days) as an alternative format
to the still existing 100-Day Test. This format was developed
for owners that wanted to train and show their stallions under
their regular rider and became at first a successful alternative.
After another 13 years, in 2009, the 30-Day Short Test format
became the standard format for our Stallion Performance Testing.
Over the course of the last 30 years more and more stallions
competed in their disciplines, and it became a hardship for many
owners to take them out of their performance career for 100 or
30 days for the stallion performance test. Consequently, we felt
that time had come to revise the testing completely again, using
all the experience from eleven tests in the US and the testing
experiences from Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands.
- This became the hour of birth of the Advanced Stallion
Test (3-Day-Test).
This new and modern 3 Day Test required the stallion to perform
in a special discipline tests designed for Dressage, Jumper or
Hunter. Stallions that have received a Certified Breeding License
were required to undergo this test within two years of the initial
approval. Older stallions, inspected at an age of six years and
above, could be tested as well and were required to perform in
one discipline at a level appropriate to their age.
This testing format did not include a Registry conducted training
period for the stallions prior to the actual test. The training
was completely in the hands of the individual owner and trainer.
The 3 Day Test format was later also adopted by other registries,
with some modifications such as two tests in two consecutive years.
ISR-Oldenburg NA has always accepted these test results as well
but continued its one-time test.
A disadvantage of the 3 Day Test was the fact, that stallions
(and their rider, groom and owner) had to travel - sometimes quite
far - for the test. This was a burden and had some influence on
the performance of the stallions who did not have time to get
used to a new environment.
All this experience now in 2024 led to another test format, the
On-Site Stallion Test. Since the end of the 100-Day test
format it was not necessary to have a group of stallions at a
test because the stallions would get independent scores for their
individual performance. Although it was better for our judges
to travel to one site and do 5, 6 or 8 stallions over the course
of three days, the disadvantage was on the side of the stallions.
The On-Site Test is now offered to be held at the home site of
the stallion but keeps the performance requirements of the 3 Day
Test. We look forward to the first stallions undergoing this test
in 2024.
